The Office of University General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to the Board of Trustees, the university, and its employees when acting within the course and scope of their university duties.

The Office of University General Counsel does not provide legal advice or representation to employees on personal matters and does not provide legal advice to students, except when those students are employees or are acting in an official role at the university (such as an officer in student government). The Office of University General Counsel works with many departments on campus and is engaged in a variety of legal activities daily, to include:

  • Reviewing Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Tech activities to determine compliance with applicable laws.
  • Monitoring the legal impact of changes in university policies and procedures.
  • Responding to official claims made against the university.
  • Advising on and interpreting contracts and handling contract disputes.
  • Advising on real property transactions.
  • Responding to subpoenas related to the recipient's responsibilities as an Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Tech employee.
  • Providing legal advice on all aspects of the employment relationship.
  • Providing training to university employees on matters with significant legal implications.
  • Providing advice in areas that support the strategic goals of the university, such as intellectual property, university advancement, athletics, and salary equity.

University employees may contact the Office of University General Counsel at any time, but you are encouraged to do so as early as possible when potential legal matters are likely to arise.
