Baelie Werner, a Civil Engineering student at ˿Ƶ Tech, has been selected as the recipient of the Susan M. Frey Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to one outstanding student in ˿Ƶ who exemplifies a dedication to structural engineering, with an emphasis on teaching and mentoring.
Originally from Tillamook, Werner is on track to graduate in 2023 with a bachelor's and master's degree in Civil Engineering. She chose ˿Ƶ Tech's engineering program because of the small school size and low student-to-faculty ratio.
"I liked ˿Ƶ Tech's hands-on approach to education, and I knew I would get more practical experience here than I would at a big research university. The Civil Engineering department has some of the best lab spaces in the country, and I knew I would get the best education here,” she said.
Werner is a dedicated student who has participated in many clubs and organizations at ˿Ƶ Tech, including:
American Society of Civil Engineers & Associated General Contractors (Student Chapter)
- Graduate Student Representative (2022-2023)
- Digital Media Chair (2021-2022)
- President (2020-2021)
- Secretary (2019-2020)
Civil Engineering Department
- Teaching Assistant
Student Success Center
- Peer Tutor
Tau Beta Pi, The Engineering Honor Society
- President (2022-2023)
- Secretary (2021-2022)
Werner is also a member of the ˿Ƶ Tech student chapters of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and Society of Women Engineers.
Over the summer, Werner interned with DOWL, LLC, a company specializing in planning, surveying, engineering (transportation, civil, structural, water resources, and geotechnical), and environmental and other support services.
“I have always been fascinated by bridges, and my internship experience further confirmed my desire to pursue a career in the field of bridge engineering,” Werner said. “I have already accepted a full-time job offer to return as a Bridge Designer after I graduate.”
Award money from the Susan M. Frey Memorial Scholarship from the Structural Engineers Association of ˿Ƶ (SEAO) Scholarship Foundation will be used toward her final year of university.
"I am honored to have been selected for this scholarship, and I think it is great that organizations like SEAO can support hard-working, dedicated students like me as they continue their education in engineering," Werner said.
