Remie Le, a Vascular Technology student at ˿Ƶ Tech, has been selected as the recipient of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) Anne Jones Educational Scholarship, which is awarded to only four students in accredited vascular ultrasound schools in the United States.
“I am beyond ecstatic to be recognized and rewarded for the work I have done for my campus and myself,” Le said. “I am proud to be part of a great academic program and an amazing Society of Vascular Ultrasound. I could not do it without the help and support from my professor, my friends, and my family.”
Le is on track to graduate in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in Vascular Technology.
“I’ve always known that I wanted to go into the medical field,” Le said. “Ultrasound caught my attention because it is non-invasive and does not involve radiation. However, I chose vascular because I liked the opportunity of cross-training in other ultrasound modalities, such as echocardiography and diagnostic medical sonography, and the ability to play a bigger role in my patient’s health care with my preliminary reports.”
Students in the Vascular Technology program spend the final year at externship sites throughout the United States. Currently a junior, Le said her extern site in Vancouver, Wash., will allow her to live in Happy Valley, Le’s hometown southeast of Portland.
“The extern draw is on a lottery system, so it's really lucky I get to go home,” Le said. “It's an 11-month externship beginning in July and ending the first week or so of June 2024.”
Students work 40 hours per week at their externship, which counts as 15 credits each term. Le noted that her classmates have externship sites in Alaska, California, Idaho, Illinois, Ohio, ˿Ƶ, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.
After graduation, Le would like to stay in the Pacific Northwest, preferably near her home in Portland or at her extern site in Vancouver.
“I would love to work at a hospital that allows me to learn other modalities,” Le said. “Not only would I get the opportunity to help more people, but it will make me a better sonographer because the vascular system is tremendously involved with the heart and other important organs.”
