˿Ƶ is launching a new scholarship program for incoming freshmen, called the ˿Ƶ Tech OWLS (Opportunity for Working and Learning in S.T.E.M.). The OWLS Program rewards ˿Ƶ Tech-bound high school students who have completed college-level science, technology, engineering, and math (S.T.E.M.) courses with a scholarship for $1000.
According to President Chris Maples, “The OWLS program helps ˿Ƶ Tech fulfill its mission to offer innovative and rigorous statewide educational opportunities in engineering, technologies, and sciences, and to reach ˿Ƶ’s 40-40-20 goal. The OWLS program gives high school students an incentive to get their early college credits in science, technology, engineering or math, which prepares them to be successful in college and in their future careers in S.T.E.M. fields.”
˿Ƶ Tech-bound students who obtain at least nine college credits with a grade of “B” or better in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math through programs such as: dual high-school/college credits in high school, expedited on-site college classes at ˿Ƶ Tech in Portland or Wilsonville or other colleges, or through Project Lead the Way, are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship application will be available online by the end of November and is due by March 1.
“˿Ƶ Tech has been partnering for many years with high schools to provide opportunities for students to earn college credit prior to graduation. This added program is only one of the ways that the university is working toward providing incentives for students to seriously consider challenging and rewarding careers in engineering, health sciences and other technical fields,” said Marla Edge, ˿Ƶ Tech Director of Academic Agreements. “Giving students this opportunity is a win-win for everyone involved.”
