˿Ƶ Tech Civil Engineering Seniors have won the 2025 KEEN Bridge Competition and a $500 prize! In its second year, the competition challenges students to create the most structurally efficient solution to span 36 inches with a piece of rigid foam insulation that is ½”x18”x36”. The ˿Ƶ Tech bridge supported 47 pounds with a weight of only 0.374 pounds, for a strength-to-weight ratio of 126. In preparing their bridge, the students assessed the material and connection properties of the foam and hot glue, which function much like steel plate and welded connections, and considered best practices in bridge girder design like cover plates and stiffeners. The Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) is a partnership of more than 55 colleges and universities across the United States. The schools in the Network focus on one mission: To reach all undergraduate engineering students with an entrepreneurial mindset so they can create personal, economic, and societal value through a lifetime of meaningful work. Eight other universities participated in the competition, including the University of Washington, James Madison University, Ohio Northern University, and Virginia Military Institute.
