As the school year comes to a close, our brand new Center for Excellence in Engineering and Technology (CEET) FINALLY brought out the gold scissors and had its grand opening on Wednesday.
The building includes a growing array of:
• Computer Labs
• Makerspace with 3D printers
• President and administrative offices
• To-go Coffee counter
• Business major classrooms
• And more
Attendees of the ribbon cutting were even given the opportunity to sign a beam in the building.
Some history:
A beam signing and “topping off” ceremony is a long-standing tradition of construction workers, particularly steelworkers, to commemorate the completion of a building‘s structure. This ceremony dates back to 700AD Scandinavia, where it was a religious rite of placing a tree atop a new (wooden) building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction.
However, it is highly unlikely that this particular steel beam was the last one to be installed (just those civil engineers keeping things stable).
