Certificate Overview

The User Experience Writing certificate is for anyone who writes on the job! Students and professionals will be prepared to develop user-centric prose and design content for a variety of audiences.

The User Experience Writing certificate teaches you to compose and edit documents in multiple media at a professional level, skills which are necessary for success in a range of careers in the modern workplace. The certificate also familiarizes students with the theories and practices of UX Writing and requires students to use writing to engage with real-world challenges in the community and beyond.

 

Graduates of the Online UX Writing certificate should be able to:

  • Research user needs and identify complex design solutions through a variety of evaluation methods.
  • Articulate design choices to a variety of collaborators involved with content creation.
  • Use accepted rhetorical, linguistic and design theories to craft user- and reader-centered documents.
  • Design and create documents using a variety of industry-standard tools.
  • Demonstrate professionally-appropriate ethical reasoning, including awareness of intellectual property in the creation and management of documents.
  • Manage the production of complex, large-scale projects and their related documentation

You can complete this 18-credit certificate in as little as 9 months, or complete it at a slower pace to meet your needs.

  • WRI 121Z Composition I (first course)
  • WRI 227Z Technical Writing
  • WRI 327 Advanced Technical Writing or WRI 350 Documentation Development

UX focus course (3 credits):

  • PWR 330 User Research

UX electives (4-6 credits):

  • ART 315 Design Thinking or WRI 420 Document Design
  • BUS 215 Principles of Management
  • BUS 256 Graphic Design for Business (take BUS 215 first)
  • MIS 101 Word Processing Software Lab or MIS 102 Spreadsheet Software Lab

18 credits is required for the certificate. This certificate may be stacked with the Technical & Medical Writing and Proposal & Grant Writing certificates.

Admission Process

Financial aid is not offered for this program but a payment plan is available. Follow the steps below to get started:

  1. Submit the .
  2. Watch for an email from the Admissions Office about registration.
  3. Register yourself for classes when registration opens.

Non-degree seeking students do not pay application fees since they are not attending a degree program and are limited to 8 credits per term.

Awarding the Certificate

Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Tech awards formal certificates upon completion of all requirements. The Registrar's Office advises soon-to-be graduates to submit the Application to Graduate two terms before completing the certificate. A certificate cannot bet awarded without the application found in TechWeb.
