The proposed microsteam turbine (NLine) would be placed into a COGEN system to absorb excess waste steam due to the facility using a backpressure steam turbine rather than a condensing turbine. The created model helped to give an estimated power output based on the steam input. (2019) estimate that 12-15% of children with autism do not have minimal dental needs met. Gillis et al., (2009) suggest that almost one third of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities exhibit avoidance and/or noncompliance with even simple physical exam procedures. These challenges may deter health practitioners from providing necessary dental services to this population.&nbsp; As part of ongoing research between the applied psychology and dental hygiene departments, this project details the provision of dental hygiene services utilizing graduated exposure with the goal of increasing cooperation in the dental office from the perspective of treating dental hygiene students. Dental hygiene students have been involved in 'dental desensitization' appointments at the OIT dental hygiene clinic since fall of 2023. Participating students are given pre-and post-appointment surveys to measure their experiences in treating this population. Students are also able to include their study participation experience as part of their capstone assignment. Many of the hospital and bariatric gurneys do not fit into certain elevators at the Sky Lakes Collabarative Health Center Building located in Klamath Falls, OR. The primary project goal was to modify an older model of Stryker brand gurney to fit successfully into the main elevators at the Collaborative Health Center. This gurney was donated to the project by the Sky Lakes Engineering Dept. Through applied reverse engineering a digital, working 3D solid model of the gurney was created and modified. This model was used to model and perform some physical modifications including retrofitting the foot end bumper bar of the gurney in order to reduce the length of the gurney bedframe. We replaced some parts including the corner foot end bumper-bar covers and knee gatch handles with 3D printed parts. We also replaced the old, marred gurney wheels with new ones. We will soon test our retrofitted gurney at the CHC to see if it fits in the elevator. This project is more of a proof of concept and experimental design rather than a fully certified medical device because we modified a gurney created by an existing manufacturer.</td></tr><tr><td height="19">Synthesis of New Transition Metal Complexes for Use in Constructing New Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells</td><td>Anthony Snyder, Marla Goodspeed, Cruze Collin, Andy Wiley</td><td height="19">Moving forward into the future, we must consider the reality of a versatile energy matrix to replace our current dependency on fossil fuels. Solar energy is a source that provides enough energy to power our entire energy economy, but current solar cell technology is either lacking in efficiency, wanting in cost, or both. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) offer a unique option to “harvest” the sun’s light in an efficient and multi-faceted manner. Not only can they be used as a cost-efficient photovoltaic, but they can also be utilized for passive solar energy simultaneously.&nbsp; &nbsp; This increased efficiency is interesting, making DSSCs worthy of our investigation as a potential piece of the energy puzzle moving into the future. While large improvements have been made in the field of DSSCs over the past two decades, they need to be more efficient, longer lasting, and cheaper. This research project attempts to harness the positive characteristics of two known light-harvesting dyes by synthesizing a series of novel ligands and subsequent metal complexes to be used as new light-harvesting dyes. This project began with a systematic synthesis of these ligands and complexes to determine a dye product that can absorb the widest wavelength window of light with the most efficiency, without degrading over time. Once successfully synthesized, photovoltaic conversion will be determined by construction and testing of a series of prototype cells. These cells will be constructed with a layer of titanium dioxide semiconductor layer, a conductive layer of doped tin(II) oxide, the novel dye (grafted onto the titanium dioxide), an electrolyte medium, and an inert electrode set. After fabrication of the prototypes, they will be tested for voltage and current production at two ˿Ƶ-based sites.</td></tr><tr><td height="19" width="190">Synthesis of Novel Ligands and Ruthenium(II) Complexes for Application in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells</td><td width="183">Caitlin Beard, Xitlaly Bencomo, Sydney Dalin, Lillian Mcallister</td><td height="19">Decades of research into silicon-based solar cells have yielded much progress; however, their potential as front-running solar cell material remains limited by high production costs and relatively large amounts of energy to produce them. The discovery of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in 1991 initiated research into sets of molecules that “harvest” the sun’s light energy as a means to drive electrons through a semiconductor material. This increased efficiency is interesting due to the small amount of dye material required for the cell to function as a photovoltaic. The DSSCs are worthy of our investigation as a potential piece of the energy puzzle moving into the future. While large improvements have been made in the field of DSSCs over the past 15-20 years, there continues to be a focus on making them more efficient, cheap, and useful. This research project attempts to harness the positive characteristics of polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes and phthalocyanine complexes by synthesizing a series of novel ligands and subsequent metal complexes to be used as new light-absorbing dyes. This project began with a systematic synthesis of these ligands and complexes to determine a dye product that can absorb the widest wavelength window of light with the most efficiency, without degrading over time. Isolation and analysis of the intermediate and final products of this novel synthesis route will be carried out. Cannabinoid Receptor Type 1 (CB1R), the major cannabinoid receptor in the nervous system, expression is widely found in the brain, including the cortex, striatum, amygdala, and hippocampus. Despite its wide distribution, the neuroanatomical evidence underlying the functional implications of CB1R remains unclear. The catecholaminergic system is one of the key neurotransmitter systems involved in the central stress responses. We hypothesized that CB1R activation could modulate catecholaminergic system via direct synaptic interaction. Brain sections of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were processed for immunocytochemical staining of CB1R and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Our findings show that CB1R immunoreactivity colocalizes with TH-immunoreactive (ir) terminals, providing anatomical evidence to support the notion that EC can serve as a retrograde messenger in modulating presynaptic neurotransmission. Interestingly, we also discovered colocalization of CB1R-ir cell bodies and TH-ir terminals, indicating TH could possibly regulate the function of CB1R-containing neurons. The infralimbic cortex shows the most concentrated expression of both CB1R and TH, implicating both endocannabinoid and catecholamine exerting their functions collaboratively in regulating cortical functions. The present studies provide important neuroanatomical information regarding the potential mechanisms governing the EC effects in central stress regulation.<br>&nbsp;</td></tr><tr><td height="19">Using Water Quality to Investigate a Unique Approach to Post-Fire Stream Protection</td><td>Cruz Collin, Abby Gamble, Terren Maplethorpe, Tegan Running</td><td height="19">The 2021 Bootleg fire burned for 5 weeks and consumed over 400,000 acres of forest and shrub lands in eastern Klamath County. The resultant loss of vegetative cover represented a tremendous loss of habitat for many terrestrial and aquatic species. The negative effects of wildfire in riparian systems include bank destabilization, increased erosion, elevated sediment loads, and degradation of water quality. Local entities acted by cutting down burned trees and placing them in and across stream channels to act as barriers to the impending downstream flow of debris and sediment. This project will measure resultant water quality from the placement of these felled trees to better understand the impacts on aquatic species, especially those endangered fish species known to have stable habitats in these streams. Upwards of twenty sites across five streams will be measured for pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, turbidity, nitrate, and phosphorus. Phosphorus content is of specific interest due to the increased load of phosphorus known to be deposited in streams, watersheds, and aquatic ecosystems after a forest fire. This type of Cyanobacteria is known to produce a cyanotoxin that can not only be harmful to humans but also to the natural habitat of species in the lake, such as two federally endangered fish species. This year, we enhanced our research by being granted use of the department qPCR machine; this has allowed us to get real-time quantifications of the bacterial growth in the lake and compare it to previous studies. Historically, two species have been thought to dominate the algal bloom season in UKL. Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) grows early in the season, and is harvested as a nutritional supplement. Microcystis aeruginosa (MA) replaces AFA later in the summer and is known to produce a cyanotoxin. In this study, samples collected from summer of 2023 were characterized using 16s analysis to look at the seasonal blooms. The poster provides information on the causes of the algae blooms, as well as the techniques used to monitor them. The algae blooms are due to the hypereutrophic nature of the lake, meaning there is an excess of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the water. This is largely caused by agricultural runoff and the drainage of wetlands surrounding the lake for agricultural use. This creates an environment where cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can thrive. Using multispectral imagery, I was able to identify the algae blooms, as chlorophyll-producing organisms have a unique spectral profile. Klamath Falls’ own Moore Park exemplifies this situation where a potential wildfire would irreversibly alter the park and potentially destroy homes in the surrounding community. In response to this risk, the City of Klamath Falls Parks Department (KFPD) implemented a series of mastication treatments between 2005 and 2012 that successfully removed areas of dense shrubs, thereby reducing the probability of a ground fire climbing into the overstory tree canopy. While the primary goal of these treatments was to decrease wildfire threat, they may also carry the added benefit of enhancing tree growth. Dense understory vegetation can directly compete with overstory trees and has been shown to negatively affect growth in several conifer species. Previous research has documented the negative effects of understory vegetation on overstory tree growth but used metrics such as tree diameter and stand volume as proxies for growth. Here, we use estimates of yearly wood production (basal area increment) to examine the effects of shrub removal on the growth of ponderosa pine in Moore Park. We hypothesize that shrub removal treatments will have a positive effect on yearly wood production and predict that basal area increment will be significantly greater in the years following treatment than in the years preceding treatment.</td></tr><tr><td height="19">Flow Boiling Experiment – Turbulator Impact on Heat Transfer</td><td>Kagan Bixler, Heather Switzer, Thomas Carlton, Joseph Fogelman, Aron Aldridge, Christina Chau, Zach Lor</td><td height="19">This research project seeks to optimize flow-obstructing devices called turbulators for enhanced heat transfer in two-phase flow. While effective, there is an upper limit on the heat flux (energy transfer per unit area) that a flow boiling system can achieve.&nbsp;<br>This limit is referred to as Critical heat flux, or the Boiling Crisis. If this point is reached, boiling ceases to be effective. The cooled system will rapidly increase in temperature, likely failing. The boiling crisis occurs when fluid is vaporized faster than it can be replenished, forming a layer of vapor on heated surfaces that acts as insulation.<br><br>A turbulator can be thought of as a speed bump that obstructs flow, inducing localized mixing of fluid passing by. This mixing has the potential to increase maximum heat transfer from a surface to a fluid by delaying the boiling crisis, but these effects are difficult to approximate. For this reason, an experiment-based approach has been chosen to test turbulator effects in a measurable way.<br><br>The team has designed a system in which flow can be induced across a heated element with a turbulator. With limited guidance and support, they often grapple with uncertainty regarding where to seek help, and well-intentioned individuals may struggle to offer suitable directions. To address this, I developed a prototype for a social media-like app called Sexual Assault Support and Services (S.A.S.S.). S.A.S.S. serves as a valuable resource hub and fosters a sense of community and understanding for survivors and advocates alike. Users can make anonymous text-based posts and comments, find resources tailored to their specific needs, and directly message others for support. By providing survivors with a supportive outlet and comprehensive resources, the initiative aims to contribute to the broader objectives of raising awareness about sexual assault and facilitating the apprehension of assailants. Importantly, the project prioritizes survivors' comfort, eschewing any semblance of coercion or discomfort. The envisioned outcome is a vibrant online community characterized by a warm and encouraging atmosphere that wholeheartedly embraces victims on their path to healing. Conventional systems suffer from issues such as frequent maintenance, delayed data retrieval, and dependence on constant cell coverage. Our system overcomes these challenges by using a motion tracking camera, radio transmitter, and mesh network to transmit images and video over long distances from remote wilderness areas. Housed in a waterproof enclosure secured to a tree trunk, this system integrates a motion tracking camera, radio, processor board, batteries, and a maximum power point tracker. Multiple solar panels, facilitated by a unique belt mounting system, ensure continuous power supply and efficient charging. The motion tracker activates the camera, capturing images transmitted via the mesh network to a long-range transceiver, capable of data transmission up to 20 miles. This trail camera system stands out as the first to combine self-charging capability, real-time data transmission, and operation in harsh remote environments. The innovative mounting system allows for multiple solar panels, maximizing charge rates and ensuring uninterrupted power supply. The primary goal is tracking wildlife movements in remote wilderness locations, with potential expansion to include various sensors for geological studies. Beyond wildlife monitoring, the automatic integrated sensor and communication network can accommodate alternative sensors, expanding its application to geological studies and other scientific research. These satellites enable research or commercial institutions to collect data, test new technological developments in space, and give experience to engineers and scientists entering industry. Due to their growing popularity, there is significant interest in enhancing the capabilities of microsatellites to reach beyond Earth's orbit. One potential approach to achieve this goal is through self-propulsion. The successful entry of two microsatellites into Martian orbit as part of the InSight Mars lander mission in 2018 demonstrated the feasibility of self-propulsion. Technologies common on larger satellites, like pulsed plasma, cold gas, and hall-effect thrusters, are being miniaturized to provide high specific impulse over extended durations. Furthermore, research into mathematical modeling of more efficient orbital transfers for low-thrust devices offers the most promising means for exploring regions farther from Earth. Despite these gains, the miniaturization efforts for new thrusters are plagued with reliability issues. Among the 10 microsatellites launched as part of the Artemis-1 mission to the Moon in 2022, only two effectively utilized their propulsion system to accomplish their missions. While enjoyable, it takes a long time to program songs, and the programming papers can easily be damaged. Replacing this paper programming are 30 servo motors linked to the 30 notes of the music box, allowing an electronically controlled operation. Songs can be played from standard MIDI files stored in internal memory, or a connected MIDI keyboard can be used to manually play the music box. The enclosure amplifies the music box, and isolates the motors from the music, delivering a clear, acoustic sound.</td></tr><tr height="60"><td width="64" height="60">Metallic Enhanced Arm (M.E.A.)</td><td width="657">I want to make a robotic arm that has no motors and muscles, I want this arm to be advanced to have no limits, metaphorically speaking. The system and model are designed to be updated to detect new unique objects as competitions change.</td></tr><tr height="105"><td width="64" height="105">Growing Buddy</td><td width="657">Growing Buddy is a modular, automated plant growing device for indoor agriculture. This prototype automates the monotonous tasks of agriculture and takes actions to remedy non ideal environmental conditions. It can turn on fans, lights, and pumps to create an ideal environment for plants. It can take measurements of the temperature, humidity, and soil moisture to monitor the environment. Growing Buddy consists of three hubs that manage communication and power needs for the rest of the system: the communication hub, the sensor hub, and the power hub. The sensor hub gathers data from the attached sensors. It sends this data to the communication hub to process. The communication hub uses ideal profiles to compare to this data. If the environment is not ideal, the communication hub sends instructions to the power hub. The power hub provides switching to high powered devices. This prototype is ideal for green houses and vertical farming.</td></tr><tr height="135"><td width="64" height="135">Design and Fabrication of a Sensor Module for an Aftermarket Vehicle Safety System</td><td width="657">There are millions of vehicles on the road today that were built before 2018, the year where automakers agreed to install backup cameras in nearly all vehicles as a standard. These older vehicles also lack many other Advanced Drivers Assistance Systems (ADAS) features. Current aftermarket vehicle safety equipment offers piecemeal solutions that consist of a separate camera kit and proximity sensor kit. Effective aftermarket solutions are also expensive, up to $2,000 for a combined camera and radar system. I wanted to see if depth played a role in the abundance of microscopic life. With a water collection device I made, I sampled water at three different depths and took those samples under a microscope. I finally was able to count the microscopic organisms I found and compare them to the different water sample depths.
