Nine members of the Students in Communication (SIC) club, along with the chapter advisor, Dr. Kevin Brown, presented the workshop mid-January to several classes of history students at Ponderosa, celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Dr. King’s non-violent approach to conflict resolution. Ponderosa students were led in brief discussion of Dr. King’s life and then watched his “I Have a Dream” speech.
Dr. Brown coordinated the event with sponsorship by Ponderosa history teachers, Stacia Hansen and Jenn Hodges. “This event gave my students and those at Ponderosa the opportunity to study the philosophy and practice of nonviolent communication as a method to drive social change,” said Dr. Brown.
Stacia Hanson noted: “This ˿Ƶ Tech presentation allows Ponderosa students to gain insight into effective, peaceful ways to exercise their First Amendment rights and allows them to experience higher education instruction and students.”
After watching the speech, the SIC students led the Ponderosa students in discussing how they could apply the principles Dr. King demonstrated in his life and in his “I Have a Dream” speech to improve the conflicts they have in their lives.
